The northern part of Syros – Ano Meria, as it is called by locals – is perhaps the most interesting part of the island, as it is untouched and invites visitors to explore it, following the trails that lead to the unique deserted beaches of the NW side. This is where the boat Perla 1 reaches by sea, giving visitors the chance to admire the unique geological landscape of North Syros.
Northern Beaches
Varvarousa
Transparent blue waters and unique sunset view
Varvarousa is the first beach that the boat approaches after departing from Kini. It is one of the longest beaches on the NW coast, sandy, with crystal clear blue waters. The islet at the entrance of the cove offers a special sight in the landscape with a unique sunset view.
Aetos
Unique turquoise waters
As we get closer to Aetos beach the colour of the sea changes. From deep blue it turns into a wonderful turquoise, unique on the island. On the beach with the golden sand and the sandy seafloor, two small trees offer their shade to the visitors, while the rocks with their special formations complete the beauty of the landscape.
Lia
Natural shade and special geological landscape
Lia is one of the most favourite beaches of Ano Meria visitors. With sand and pebbles, it has the advantage of a small cluster of tamarisk trees that provides natural shade. Lia is of particular geological interest, due to the rare rocks present in the area.
Megas Lakos
The smallest of the NW beaches
Megas Lakos may be the smallest of the NW beaches but it is not lacking in beauty. The beach consists mainly of pebbles and coarse sand near the water. The tranquillity of the landscape will reward you.
Marmari
Shallow turquoise waters
Marmari is the shallowest beach on the NW side. The waters here have a wonderful turquoise colour, creating an exotic landscape for every visitor.
Grammata - Gria Spilia
Two beaches in Grammata bay
Gria Spilia
It is the most famous of the NW beaches of Syros. It has natural shade from pine and tamarisk trees, sandy seafloor, and is protected from strong north winds Also known as the beach of Americanos, it is one of the few forested areas of the island and remains the property of John Americanos’s family, as he is remembered by the locals.
Grammata
A short distance from the beach of Graia Spilia, through a footpath, you will find Grammata, a very small sandy beach, close to the archaeological site of the inscriptions.
The archaeological site of Grammata
Grammata bay is known since antiquity as the most sheltered from the strong winds that blow in the area. Names, dates, thanks and prayers of sailors who took shelter there to protect themselves from bad weather conditions can still be found engraved on the rocks. The inscriptions date back mainly to the Hellenistic and Roman periods, and are one of the most important archaeological sites of Syros.
